Sarah’s Reviews

Two Girls Down

You know that totally-absorbed-can’t-put-it-down reading experience?  Louisa Luna’s Two Girls Down provides just that. It’s riveting, suspenseful, surprising and so addictive that I had to slow down in my eagerness to get to the next twist in order to appreciate the admirable prose. Luna’s style is straightforward but creative, and I love finding those unique turns of phrase that mark a clever and observant writer’s prose.

The Alice Network

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn is a stunning book that brings to life the dangerous world of female espionage agents in World War I. The "present day" of the novel is two years post-World War II, and American Charlie St. Clair sets off to find her cousin, missing since the last days of the fall of France. She enlists the help of the mysterious Eve Gardiner, whose story as a spy in the Alice Network in France is interwoven through the novel in flashback.

The Language of Secrets

In her first book, The Unquiet Dead, Ausma Zehant Khan introduced us to Inspector Esa Khattak and his partner Rachel Getty of the RCMP in Ontario. Their unit—Community Policing Section—is charged with bridging gaps between the Muslim community and the police. The Language of Secrets takes up where the first novel left off: Khattak finds himself, as a devout Muslim, caught between his job and his faith community and undergoing an internal review based on his handling of a previous case.

Midnight Crossroads

Charlaine Harris offers up the first of a new trilogy with this release.  Harris has achieved great success with the Dead Until Dark books with vampire character Sookie Stackhouse and has had other successful series with characters Aurora Teagarden, Harper Connelly and Lily Bard.  Her work is usually on the grittier side of cozy—a mash-up of mystery, romance, crime,  and the supernatural--

The Last of the Doughboys By Richard Rubin

What Tom Brokaw did for “The Greatest Generation,” Richard Rubin tries to do for their predecessors: the WWI generation, specifically those Americans who served in the American Expeditionary Forces. Rubin sought out the few surviving veterans of WWI (all of whom we have now lost to time), and he lets them tell their stories.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes

Is it necessary to offer a recommendation for Sherlock Holmes? What an extraordinary creation is Doyle’s great detective. He has inspired writers and readers for a hundred years. If you are a fan of the new PBS Sherlock series, you will love going back to the originals, some of which have been the inspiration for the new TV episodes.

Cherry Ames Student Nurse Stories by Helen Wells

Oh, I loved these books! It is so exciting to see these reissues of the original titles. Like Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames is a smart, plucky, resourceful and caring young woman who solves mysteries and helps others as she fills various positions as a nurse. Yes, they are throwbacks, but so much fun. Cherry is a wonderful character. Recommended by Sarah Young.
