Literary Potpourri

By Kelly Barth

Here are some random new interesting tidbits. No theme this time, just a potpourri of things that caught my interest.

Planta Sapiens: The New Science of Plant Intelligence by Paco Calvo

Just out in paperback is the fabulous Planta Sapiens. In it, botanist Paco Calvo asks us to reconsider our relationship with the plant world. Instead of seeing plants as unfeeling matter to be consumed and enslaved, he asks us to consider them as sentient beings worthy of our respect and consideration. Calvo asks a couple of key questions for readers to consider: Must something have a brain to feel pain and to live with intention? What is intelligence? Drawing on the most recent experiments and the support of pioneering botanists like himself, Calvo gives readers every reason to give our relationships with the plant world a much deeper look.

H is for Hope by Elizabeth Kolbert

Elizabeth Kolbert pulls no punches when it comes to telling the absolute truth about climate change. And her newest book, H Is for Hope, an illustrated alphabet book about what we can and cannot do at this point, does offer some of what its title indicates: hope.

Finding the Fox by Andreas Tiernshaugen

Finding the Fox offers a layman’s-eye view of the fox in his native Norway. He asks essential questions: Is it more cat than dog? Is it a scourge or an essential part of a healthy ecosystem? But that’s not all he does. He also explores the fox writ large as it has lived in the minds and imaginations of people throughout the ages and around the world. A lovely book.
