Amy Jo Burns knows how to write about family. In Mercury, she takes us into the Joseph family. Mick and Elise Joseph have built a life in the small town of Mercury, where Mick and their two teenage sons Baylor and Waylon work in their roofing business and Elise takes care of them and their younger son Shay. Their already complicated relationships are further complicated when Marley, an attractive teenage girl, moves to town and is immediately noticed by both Baylor and Waylon. Burns reveals each of her characters, with all their longings, weaknesses, strengths, and secrets as she takes us backward and forward in time and alternates the focus from one family member to the next. This is a novel of richly developed and deeply flawed characters, and a smoothly flowing plot with excellent twists and surprises. Recommended by Nancy
