ABOUT JOY SAWYER: Joy Roulier Sawyer grew up in Colby, Kansas, and is the author of two poetry collections, Lifeguards and Tongues of Men and Angels, as well as several nonfiction books. She holds an MA from New York University, where she received the Herbert Rubin Award for Outstanding Creative Writing, and teaches at Lighthouse Writers Workshop in Denver.

ABOUT JOY SAWYER'S BOOK, LIFEGUARDS: As its title promises, Joy Roulier Sawyer’s Lifeguards introduces poems whose Kansas characters gently tug us through threatening waters to safety. The stories told here—of an alcoholic mother, a nerdy gardener, a heroic boyfriend—overflow with music and elegy, love and humor. Whether pondering the delights of Dairy Queen or dry martinis, Sawyer’s refreshing blend of genuine reverence and sly wit never fails to entertain, exhort, and enlighten.
