Doug Bornemann Book Launch

We are delighted to host the launch of local author Doug Bornemann’s latest book, A House of Cards. The second book in the Heiromancer Trilogy, this period fantasy uses an ensemble cast to explore how perceptions of inequity drive and define us.

A House of Cards continues the saga of college student Dona Merinne as she is swept up into a complex web of schemes and secrets in which everyone has something to hide and something to lose. Whimsically magical, with just a touch of evil, The Heiromancer Trilogy features smart, strong-willed characters working at cross purposes. The setting features a Victorian-style society where the Church has so effectively suppressed magic that most doubt it even exists. That’s about to change.

Some of the lives that collide in A House of Cards:

A gifted young woman who sets her sights on becoming a professor at a University that has only recently begun admitting female students.

A spinster scion of a wealthy family who is bent on wreaking subtly crafted vengeance on those who wronged her.

A disaffected professor, drunk on his first taste of forbidden magic, who chafes at the restrictions imposed by his more-cautious mentor.

An honorable monsignor who has devoted his life to atoning for his father’s sins by assuming the position his father held while committing them.

A wily old priest who schemes against the Church’s uppermost echelons for nebulous, if not downright nefarious, purposes.

A dutiful son who risks everything to protect his family’s explosive secret.

A seizure-prone uncle who is convinced his affliction enables him to glimpse the future.

The Raven Book Store will sell copies of Bornemann’s work, and a signing will follow a reading and discussion.
