The Collection Plate

Kendra Allen’s The Collection Plate weaves together themes of blackness, religion, family, and death like a blanket passed down for generations. While Allen expresses a life that is singular to her, she addresses the greater feeling of being raised black in a white society. Allen ties television and sexuality to Sunday morning church and white tears. The Collection Plate holds a place for all the emotions that come with being alive. While marginalization can lead to anger and far too much grief, Allen teases out moments of joy and possibility. This collection is both a reminder of the work we need to do and a comforting hug after a long day. Recommended by Nikita
