Children’s Books Reviews

EXTRA YARN by Mac Barnett

EXTRA YARN, by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Jon Klassen, is a warm, comfort story based on the simple, yet magical premise of a little girl with an unending supply of yarn in a box. My favorite thing about this book is watching the color spread and fill the bleak setting page by page. You feel a warming up along with the main character Anabelle, and the people and animals of her world. Lovely, enchanting, and a little quirky! A good book for cheering up after a hard day or for a bit of sun in the winter! Recommended by Caitlin.

DRAGONS LOVE TACOS, written by Adam Rubin and illustrated by Daniel Salmieri, is a fun read that leaves you feeling a bit mischievous and more than a bit hungry for tacos. Part of the fun comes from the idea of having a conversation with these great, mythical creatures. The book also comes with a surprise, fiery ending. This book is a laugh for girls and boys. With all the vampires, dragons, and fantastical subjects out there, this is a refreshing story about an average boy, in an extraordinary situation--which every child can relate to. After accidentally shooting an older friend’s cat, Ned carries the secret until he can hardly bear it. This is a terrific tale of friendship and redemption. Recommended by Kelly.

13 ARTISTS CHILDREN SHOULD KNOW by Angela Wenzel

13 ARTISTS CHILDREN SHOULD KNOW, by Angela Wenzel, connects the reader to each artist with illuminating biographical information and then introduces specific aspects of the artist’s work. This book is definitely educational, but the beautiful color and child friendly language will help engage young readers. It also encourages experimentation and has ideas for young artists to develop their own art. I had a hard time choosing a favorite; it was a toss up between Monet and Matisse. However, I think young readers will love Franz Marc’s animal paintings. The 13 artists are: Da Vinci, Vermeer, Monet, Rousseau, Cassatt, Van Gogh, Matisse, Klee, Marc, Picasso, Chagall, Kahlo, and Warhol. Recommended by Caitlin.

IT’S A BOOK by Lane Smith

IT’S A BOOK, by Lane Smith, is a humourous look at the next generation rediscovering the marvels of a book. (Despite the fact that they don’t tweet, text, or make noise). Along with the humor, my favorite part of this book is the way illustrations are used to linger in important moments. A little bit sarcastic, a little bit slapstick, this is a good book for adults who like to laugh at our dependance on technology and for children who like to giggle at clever animal characters. Recommended by Caitlin.

ANGUS, THONGS, AND FULL FRONTAL SNOGGING by Louise Rennison

Beginning with ANGUS, THONGS, AND FULL FRONTAL SNOGGING, all of the books in Louise Rennison’s Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series, are simply hilarious. As a teenager, my friends and I couldn’t stop reading the escapades of Georgia and her vivacious gang. Definitely girly, but also infinitely funny, they are a British pop song turned teenage girl novel. Get ready for british slang, a frisky little sister, insane cats, annoying parents, disco dances, and sexgods. I can say without hesitation, these books are quite fabbity-fab. Recommended by Caitlin.

Angus:
My mixed-breed cat, half domestic tabby, half Scottish wildcat. The size of a small Labrador, only mad.

Thongs:
Stupid underwear. What's the point of them, anyway? They just go up your bum, as far as I can tell.

Full-Frontal Snogging:
Kissing with all the trimmings, lip to lip, open mouth, tongues ... everything.
