Charlaine Harris offers up the first of a new trilogy with this release. Harris has achieved great success with the Dead Until Dark books with vampire character Sookie Stackhouse and has had other successful series with characters Aurora Teagarden, Harper Connelly and Lily Bard. Her work is usually on the grittier side of cozy—a mash-up of mystery, romance, crime, and the supernatural-- and this new series seems to follow in that vein. If you like the supernatural elements of Dead Until Dark, you will be on some familiar territory here. Midnight, Texas is a wide-spot-in-the-road town that is a refuge for the outcast, the displaced, the unusual, the frightened (and frightening), and the people who just want to disappear. To it comes Manfred Bernardo, who sets up his online/phone psychic business across the street from Midnight Pawn, that has an employee who only comes out at night, and the Home Cookin restaurant, the favorite local gathering place. Also in Midnight, he finds the local witch and plenty of people who really don’t want to be found. Harris has generated an interesting group of characters, who find themselves bound together in part by virtue of their status as outsiders in “normal” society. Readers of Harris’ other series will find recognize a few connections to her other works, but this is a brand new world of unique and memorable characters. Recommended by Sarah
